"IVe got the right leverage/' Jack answered,jerking his head toward Will, who stood at thedoor out of earshot.

"The kid?"

"That is the child of Bootstrap Bill Turner. Hisonly child!" whispered Jack.

Gibbs looked over at Will, who was trying tokeep some scoundrel from chasing a servingwench, then narrowed his eyes. "Leverage, sayyou. I think I feel a change in the wind, says I. FUfind us a crew!" he said excitedly, and slammed histankard down on the table.

By morning, Gibbs had lined up everyweather-beaten, ragged rogue in Tortuga for Jack'sinspection. "Feast your eyes, Cap'n. All of themfaithful hands before the mast. Every man worthhis salt, and crazy to boot!"

Jack moved down the line. It was a motleycrew of men, some of whom looked like theyhadn't seen a patch of good luck in a good, longtime. He passed several, then came upon a bright-eyed prospect with a large, colorful parrot on his

shoulder. Jack looked at him and raised aneyebrow . . . but the sailor said nothing.

"Cotton here is mute, sir. Poor devil had histongue cut out . . . ," said Gibbs, opening upCotton's mouth. Jack cringed. ". . . So he wentand trained the parrot to talk for him," Gibbscontinued brightly.

"Wind in your sails!" screeched the parrot.

Jack sighed, nodded, and continued on. Hestopped in front of a hunched sailor whoseface was shaded by a three-cornered hat. Jackleaned over to get a closer look and was suddenlyslapped to the ground. The hat fell awayand there stood a woman as strong and tallas Jack.

"Guess you didn't deserve that one, either?"asked Will.

"No, that one I deserved," answered Jack."Hello, AnaMaria."

"You stole my boat!" she shouted.

"Borrowed," said Jack. "Without permission—but with every intention of bringing it back!"

"And did you bring it back?" AnaMariademanded.

"Ah , . . no, but IVe got something better,"answered Jack, motioning to the Interceptor.

Jack looked at the line of men. "Fm asking allof you to join my crew," he announced. "Sailunder my command, and at voyage's end, theInterceptor will be yours! What do you say?"

The sailors nodded enthusiastically. "Aye! Fmin!" they shouted.

"You can get your assignments from my firstmate," Jack said, and nodded to AnaMaria."Prepare to set sail!"

The crew poured onto the Interceptorimmediately and the ship left Tortuga withinthe hour.
